How to Import AI Files (Adobe Illustrator)
1
Understanding AI Files
Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files are native vector documents that contain:
- Editable vector paths (scalable without quality loss)
- Layers and sublayers with organizational structure
- Live text (when fonts are available)
- Embedded images or linked assets
- CMYK/RGB color profiles (print/web optimized)
Compatibility Note: AI files work best in Adobe apps. For non-Adobe software,
convert to EPS or PDF for better results.

Import Methods by Software
- Direct Open: File > Open (Ctrl+O/Cmd+O)
- Place into Document: File > Place (embed or link)
- Drag and Drop: From Finder/Explorer into workspace
Pro Tip: Hold Alt/Option while placing to show import options dialog.
- File > Open As Smart Object (preserves scalability)
- Set desired resolution and dimensions in import dialog
- Choose between:
- Rasterize: For pixel-based editing
- Paths: To import vector paths only
Text layers will rasterize unless converted to shapes in Illustrator first.
- File > Import (Ctrl+I)
- Enable "AI Import" options:
- Convert text to curves (if fonts missing)
- Merge layers (simplifies complex files)
- Check "Extract embedded images" if needed
- Conversion Required: First convert to SVG/PNG on desktop:
- Open in Illustrator
- File > Export > SVG/PNG
- Transfer to mobile device
- Import into PixelLab via:
- Gallery > Import Image
- Direct file browser access (Android)
For vector editing on mobile, try Vectornator or Adobe Illustrator for iPad.

Troubleshooting AI File Issues
Common Problems and Solutions
- Missing fonts:
- Outline text in Illustrator (Type > Create Outlines)
- Package fonts with File > Package
- Broken links:
- Use File > Links panel to relink assets
- Embed images before exporting
- Version errors:
- Save as older format (File > Save As > Illustrator CS6)
- Check "Create PDF Compatible File" option
Security Alert
AI files may contain embedded scripts. Only open files from trusted sources, or use File > Open with PDF engine for safer inspection.
Pro Workflow Tip
For team collaboration with non-Adobe users:
- Save original .ai file for internal use
- Export parallel .pdf version with layers intact
- Include an .svg fallback for digital use
