How to Import AI Files (Adobe Illustrator)

Understanding AI Files

Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files are native vector documents that contain:

  • Editable vector paths (scalable without quality loss)
  • Layers and sublayers with organizational structure
  • Live text (when fonts are available)
  • Embedded images or linked assets
  • CMYK/RGB color profiles (print/web optimized)
Compatibility Note: AI files work best in Adobe apps. For non-Adobe software, convert to EPS or PDF for better results.

Import Methods by Software

  1. Direct Open: File > Open (Ctrl+O/Cmd+O)
  2. Place into Document: File > Place (embed or link)
  3. Drag and Drop: From Finder/Explorer into workspace
Pro Tip: Hold Alt/Option while placing to show import options dialog.
  1. File > Open As Smart Object (preserves scalability)
  2. Set desired resolution and dimensions in import dialog
  3. Choose between:
    • Rasterize: For pixel-based editing
    • Paths: To import vector paths only
Text layers will rasterize unless converted to shapes in Illustrator first.
  1. File > Import (Ctrl+I)
  2. Enable "AI Import" options:
    • Convert text to curves (if fonts missing)
    • Merge layers (simplifies complex files)
  3. Check "Extract embedded images" if needed
  1. Conversion Required: First convert to SVG/PNG on desktop:
    1. Open in Illustrator
    2. File > Export > SVG/PNG
  2. Transfer to mobile device
  3. Import into PixelLab via:
    • Gallery > Import Image
    • Direct file browser access (Android)
For vector editing on mobile, try Vectornator or Adobe Illustrator for iPad.

Conversion Options for Non-Adobe Apps

Format Best For How to Convert
PDF Print projects, maximum compatibility File > Save As > PDF (check "Preserve Editing Capabilities")
EPS Legacy vector software File > Save As > EPS (version CS2 for widest support)
SVG Web design, mobile apps File > Export > SVG (use "Responsive" preset)
PNG Raster fallback, social media File > Export > PNG (@2x or 3x resolution)

Troubleshooting AI File Issues

Common Problems and Solutions

  • Missing fonts:
    • Outline text in Illustrator (Type > Create Outlines)
    • Package fonts with File > Package
  • Broken links:
    • Use File > Links panel to relink assets
    • Embed images before exporting
  • Version errors:
    • Save as older format (File > Save As > Illustrator CS6)
    • Check "Create PDF Compatible File" option

Security Alert

AI files may contain embedded scripts. Only open files from trusted sources, or use File > Open with PDF engine for safer inspection.

Pro Workflow Tip

For team collaboration with non-Adobe users:

  1. Save original .ai file for internal use
  2. Export parallel .pdf version with layers intact
  3. Include an .svg fallback for digital use
